The sheets first appeared between November 1838 and April 1842 in various issues of the magazines Le Charivari and Caricature, all on newsprint with text on the reverse. Subsequently, the series was published as an album. The first four series caricature the machinations and activities of Robert Macaire, an imaginary figure who represents the unscrupulous businessman of that era. First appearing in 1823 in a play by Benjamin Antier and Frédérick Lemaître and presented again in 1835, the figure was captured by Daumier in a lithograph in 1836. The series "Les Bohémiens", included here, comprises 28 sheets and contains a number of sought-after lithographs. Rare as a complete series.
