    Comments

Alberto Giacometti and Tristan Tzara both joined the Surrealist movement around 1930, but broke with it again around 1935. In 1949, Tzara asked the artist to design a frontispiece for his poetry collection "Phases". Giacometti chose a portrait of the author, namely "Tristan Tzara I". This publication can be regarded as the last collaboration between the two friends; until the author's death in 1963, they shared a close friendship. There are two drawings as preliminary studies. One shows the author in a wider image section, sitting in an armchair, the other drawing already corresponds more closely to the final frontispiece. The lithograph was printed by Fernand Mourlot. The book was bound in 1960 by Georges Leroux (1922-1999).
