"Poèmes", with its 24 colour woodcuts, is among the most fascinating and elaborate graphic works created by the artist at the end of the 1960s in collaboration with Jacques Frélaut and Jaime Herrera. The accompanying prospectus to the publication mentions that 138 colour plates were required for the printing and that the printing process involved more than 41,000 passes, extending over a total period of two years.

Chagall was always drawn to poetry and had been writing texts since his youth. The portfolio brings together the most important poems the artist wrote between 1930 and 1964. They were translated by Philippe Jaccottet from a version by Moshe Lazar. An early poem from 1909, which remained memorable to Chagall, is also included under the title "Le jardin". The typography for this illustrated book was done by the printer Fequet et Baudier, Paris, while the woodcuts were printed by Atelier Lacourière et Frélaut.

"Poèmes" zählt mit seinen 24 Farbholzschnitten zu den faszinierendsten und aufwendigsten grafischen Arbeiten, die der Künstler Ende der 1960er-Jahre in Zusammenarbeit mit Jacques Frélaut und Jaime Herrera geschaffen hat. Im beiliegenden Prospekt zur Publikation wird erwähnt, dass für den Druck 138 Farbplatten benötigt wurden und der Druckvorgang mehr als 41000 Durchgänge umfasste, die sich insgesamt über einen Zeitraum von zwei Jahren erstreckte.

Chagall war der Poesie stets zugewandt und schrieb schon seit jungen Jahren Texte. Das Portfolio versammelt die wichtigsten Gedichte, die der Künstler zwischen 1930 und 1964 verfasste. Sie wurden von Philippe Jaccottet nach einer Fassung von Moshe Lazar übersetzt. Auch ein frühes Gedicht aus dem Jahr 1909, das Chagall in Erinnerung blieb, ist unter dem Titel "Le jardin" abgedruckt. Für die Typografie dieses illustrierten Buches war die Druckerei Fequet et Baudier, Paris, verantwortlich, für den Druck der Holzschnitte das Atelier Lacourière et Frélaut.
