The black area at upper left very slightly rubbed. The sheet with a few grip marks. In excellent condition
Pierre Soulages works with vertical and horizontal black forms that are distributed across the light surface of the paper. The black elements are not arranged evenly, but instead follow an internal logic of tension and weight. Some areas are dense and dark, others remain open. The ink strokes are applied expressively, with some transitions blurred. The composition appears spontaneous, yet the arrangement is structurally well thought out.
This work was probably a model for a later printmaking work, perhaps for Lithograph No. 4 From 1957. On the reverse is a handwritten letter from Soulages to his lithographer Jean Pons (1913-2005) with instructions for execution. The drawing served as a design template for the technical realization in print. Soulages developed his characteristic language of black forms over decades. His works with ink and pen are explorations of the relationship between black, white, and space. The close collaboration with Pons demonstrates the artisanal practice through which Soulages realized his graphic ideas in various techniques.

Die schwarze Fläche oben links ganz leicht berieben. Das Blatt mit wenigen Griffknicken. In ausgezeichneter Erhaltung
