    Comments

The painter, sculptor, and graphic artist from Graubünden, Matias Spescha, devoted himself to exploring abstract formal languages as early as the early 1960s. Influenced by Informel and abstract expressionism, he developed an independent artistic position. Spescha is considered one of the most important artists from Graubünden between Alberto Giacometti and Not Vital and is regarded as an influential figure in Swiss post-war art. From 1970 onwards, his artistic focus increasingly shifted to sculpture as well as the design of walls and spaces, although he never abandoned painting and printmaking. Until his death, his work remained characterized by a formal affinity with American Minimal Art and left a lasting mark on the Swiss art scene. The present large-format work exemplifies Spescha's reduced formal language and the clarity of his abstract pictorial conception.
