The artist Gazbia Sirry, born in Cairo, had over 50 solo exhibitions during her lifetime, and her works were acquired by collectors and museums all over the world. She received international awards, scholarships, and teaching assignments at universities, for example, in 1965 a scholarship for a residency at the Huntington Hartford Foundation in Pacific Palisades, an artists' colony in the Santa Monica Mountains. There she came into contact with abstract expressionism, which influenced her third and final stage of artistic development. Shems Friedlander, American Islamic scholar and emeritus professor at the American University in Cairo, described Sirry as "a senior Egyptian artist who is recognised on an international level. Her value to both the University and Egypt is both as an artist and a historian of Egypt's culture for over 60 years. She has both joined and led the trends in Egyptian art for several decades."
