In impeccable condition
On the occasion of the breakthrough of the Gotthard Base Tunnel on October 15, 2010 in Sedrun, Roman Signer staged an action in which he sent one hundred yellow helmets flying into the air in front of the tunnel portal—a tribute to the hard and long-standing work of the miners. This action took place during a celebration broadcast live on Swiss television and formed the artistic finale: Signer placed explosives under the workers’ helmets, which were in containers filled with water. When detonated, the helmets and water fountains shot spectacularly into the air. For this edition, Signer used a red miner’s box, of the type used by miners to transport explosives and safety equipment, and included an original helmet from the action. Fascinating documentation of this historic project from the planning phase to the detonation.
