As a founding member of the Nuova Secessione Artistica Italiana movement, Giuseppe Santomaso sought to find a synthesis between realism and abstraction, but turned to Informel in the 1950s. Since the 1970s, he has been strongly inspired by the architecture of his hometown. Architectural elements of the Venetian palazzi, such as the pointed arch in the present work, are recurring motifs in his works.
