    Comments

The small-format work shows a stylized Italian mountain village, whose architecture is reduced to a few striking lines and geometric shapes. Roofs, walls, and the church tower come together in a rhythmically structured composition that conveys less a topographical view than a poetic memory of a Mediterranean landscape.

Characteristic for Nicholson is the balanced interplay of linear construction and freely applied areas of colour. The delicate blue washes enliven the strictly geometric structure and lend the sheet an atmospheric lightness. Through the subsequent reworking of the etching with washed oil paint and ink, each execution becomes a unique individual piece and documents Nicholson's interest in combining printmaking and painterly means of expression. The composition reworks the upper left section of a trial proof of the etching "Italian Mountain Village (Lucca)", which is listed in the Lafranca catalogue raisonné under no. 116 And dated 1967. However, the present variation was already created in 1965.
