On the original stretcher, in the old nailing. In impeccable condition
Richard Paul Lohse's art is characterized by a consistently geometric-systematic pictorial structure as well as an intensive engagement with colour as a creative element. He made a name for himself not only with his art but also as an important theorist. His insightful reflections on art and society bear witness to a critically thinking mind. At the same time, he was deeply committed to social justice.
Today, Richard Paul Lohse is regarded as one of the most important representatives of constructive-concrete art; in 2026, an exhibition at Haus Konstruktiv was dedicated to him. With his multifaceted and extensive oeuvre, he shaped both the development of modern Swiss graphic art and the international avant-garde of the post-war period. It is particularly noteworthy that Lohse developed his rational and serial pictorial systems even before comparable European artist movements did so in the 1960s, such as ZERO in Düsseldorf or the Nouveaux Réalistes in Paris.
The present painting is a characteristic example of Lohse's work. The clearly structured composition of squares and rectangles, as well as the consistently arranged colour fields, lend the work a precise order and at the same time an impressive visual impact.
