Comments

Heavy brushstrokes and numerous splashes of vibrant color characterize the artist's work in the 1980s. Amidst the flood of color, however, the grid structure of his paintings from the late 1970s does not disappear entirely: Lines, arcs, bars, and the cross motif in the present work still traverse the picture surface, creating a fundamental geometric framework that anchors the chaotic color fields. Thick blue, black, red, and violet patches of color overlay the transparent turquoise stripes applied with paint rollers. The white ground here is not merely a background; it stands as an independent space within the composition.

The work was created on the reverse of a trial proof for the unpublished screen print "Of Vega" from 1972.

Erläuterungen

Schwere Pinselstriche und zahlreiche Spritzer leuchtender Farben zeichnen das Schaffen des Künstlers in den 1980er-Jahren aus. Inmitten der Farbenflut verschwindet jedoch der Rasteraufbau seiner Gemälde aus den späten 1970er-Jahren nicht vollständig: Striche, Bögen, Balken sowie das Kreuzmotiv im vorliegenden Werk durchziehen weiterhin die Bildfläche und schaffen ein grundlegendes, geometrisches Gerüst, das die chaotischen Farbfelder verankert. Pastose blaue, schwarze, rote und violette Farbflecken überlagern die transparenten, mit Farbrollern aufgetragenen türkisen Streifen. Der weisse Grund bildet dabei nicht bloss einen Hintergrund, er steht als eigenständiger Raum in der Komposition.

Die Arbeit ist auf der Rückseite eines Probedruckes für die unveröffentlichte Serigrafie "Of Vega" aus dem Jahr 1972 entstanden.
