Comments

Space and color are central artistic means of expression in Sam Francis's work. In the mid-1960s, the so-called "Edge Paintings" emerged—compositions in which bands of color frame an unpainted, generously left white area. The present work is stylistically connected to this period, yet freer in expression: The bands of color detach from the edge and advance into the empty area in intersecting traces. Spots, drops, and splashes of color are applied onto the strips, which have been wetly rolled on, and the overlays of color create complex chromatic interactions.

The present work is from the transitional phase leading to the "Fresh Air Paintings" characteristic of the early 1970s, which are defined by a pronounced formal grid of stripes.

Erläuterungen

Raum und Farbe sind zentrale künstlerische Gestaltungsmittel im Schaffen von Sam Francis. Mitte der 1960er-Jahre entstehen die sogenannten "Edge Paintings", Kompositionen, bei denen Farbbänder eine unbemalte, grosszügig belassene weisse Fläche umrahmen. Die vorliegende Arbeit schliesst stilistisch an diese Periode an und ist dennoch freier im Ausdruck: Die Farbbänder lösen sich vom Rand und dringen in sich kreuzenden Spuren in die leere Fläche vor. Auf die mit Rollern nass aufgetragenen Streifen werden dabei Farbflecken, -tropfen und -spritzer appliziert, deren Farbüberlagerungen komplexe chromatische Wechselwirkungen erzeugen.

Die vorliegende Arbeit ist ein Werk aus der Übergangsphase zu den für die frühen 1970er-Jahre charakteristischen "Fresh Air Paintings", welche ein ausgeprägtes formales Streifenraster auszeichnet.
