The present sheet is an early work by Sam Francis from 1950, when the artist moved from Berkeley to Paris. The work belongs to a group of compositions characteristic of this period, distinguished by horizontally overlapping fields of color. Painted in red-orange tones traversed by a black stripe, it evokes the impression of a sunset gradually giving way to night. Landscape elements such as sky, land, and sea are suggested by the horizontally arranged color fields. This play of light, which he observed as an effect of the morning and evening sky over the Pacific, was experienced by Sam Francis during his long hospital stay between 1943 and 1947 from his hospital bed: "…The play of light on the ceiling, the dawn sky and sunset sky of the Pacific, when the cot was wheeled out on the hospital balcony…".

With its expansive fields of color, the present work marks the transition to the monochrome, all-over compositions of the early 1950s.

Das vorliegende Blatt ist ein Frühwerk von Sam Francis aus dem Jahr 1950, als der Künstler von Berkeley nach Paris übersiedelte. Die Arbeit gehört zu einer Gruppe für diese Periode charakteristischer Kompositionen, die sich durch horizontal überlagernde Farbfelder auszeichnen. Gemalt in rot-orangen Farbtönen, die von einem schwarzen Streifen durchzogen sind, evoziert es den Eindruck eines Sonnenuntergangs, der allmählich der Nacht weicht. Landschaftselemente wie Himmel, Land und Meer werden dabei durch die horizontal angeordneten Farbflächen suggeriert. Dieses Lichtspiel, das er als Effekt des Morgen- und Abendhimmels über dem Pazifik beobachtete, erlebte Sam Francis während seines langjährigen Spitalaufenthalts zwischen 1943 und 1947 aus seinem Krankenbett im Spital heraus: "…The play of light on the ceiling, the dawn sky and sunset sky of the Pacific, when the cot was wheeled out on the hospital balcony…".

Mit den weiträumigen Farbfeldern markiert die vorliegende Arbeit den Übergang zu den monochromen, flächendeckenden Kompositionen der frühen 1950er-Jahre.
