    Comments

James Bishop consciously refers to his works on paper as paintings and not as drawings. As in his paintings, he applies oil paint in layers. Unlike on canvas, the paint penetrates the paper to varying depths, creating dense areas of color with soft, diffuse transitions. The composition, constructed from colored lines, is reminiscent of architectural structures. Square and rectangular forms with horizontal and vertical divisions evoke the façade of a house with windows. However, this is not a depiction of a specific building, but rather an abstracted memory of the architecture of the French village of Blévy, where Bishop had his permanent residence since 1958.
