    Comments

The small-format work in oil and pencil on paper from 1991 illustrates James Bishop's consistent reduction to the essentials. In a subtle, lyrical visual language, he combines drawing and painting, opacity and transparency, as well as surface and space into a balanced whole. A restrained golden-brown tone and simple linear structures give the work a quiet, concentrated presence. Bishop understood painting as an independent language and let his works speak for themselves. Thus, an intimate, subtle pictorial world emerges, oscillating between abstraction and spatial suggestion, which the art critic John Ashbery once aptly described as "half architecture, half air"
