Allan D'Arcangelo pursued the goal in his work of capturing the American way of life in pictorial form. In the early 1960s, he created stylized depictions of deserted highways from a deliberately exaggerated perspective. He repeatedly integrated familiar elements of the road environment such as traffic signs or guardrails. The cool, reduced visual language and the consistent abstraction lend the present work an atmosphere of emptiness. With the increasing detachment from representational depiction of his motifs, "Landscape" and other works from this creative period opened up a wide range of interpretive possibilities. The geometric forms may, not least due to their coloration, recall a railroad barrier. However, their high degree of abstraction prevents a clear identification. The effect of the composition arises from the tension-filled relationship of the color fields as well as from the consistent reduction to elementary forms.

In tadelloser Erhaltung
