    Comments

The present sheet is a study on the theme "Démolisseur", which Paul Signac explored in several works: a large-format painting now in the collection of the Musée d'Orsay, as well as a lithograph in the tonal style of his early drawings, which is closely related to the present work. The drawing was probably created around 1897, thus in close proximity to the print of 1896.

The motif represents the most explicit political statement in the artist's oeuvre. The lithograph appeared in the anarchist magazine Les temps nouveaux, published by Jean Grave, and the symbolism is clear: a worker destroys the capitalist state with a pickaxe, while the rising sun heralds a new order.
