    Comments

With his first participation in an exhibition at Herwarth Walden's gallery Der Sturm in Berlin, Schwitters became known in the art scene. Engaged in the Dada movement, he sought his own form and developed the term "Merz" for his art in the winter of 1918/1919. From then on, he called all his activities "Merz". In 1919, he joined the IVEKF, the "Internationalen Vereinigung von Expressionisten, Kubisten und Futuristen", which had been founded, among others, by Herwarth Walden and Rudolf Blümner. During this period, his first assemblages were created, and alongside his first stamp pictures, a series of Dadaist watercolours, which he numbered consecutively. The present sheet bears the number "9". Even after developing his own abstraction, he continued to create representational works. A very beautiful work, probably with a crashing tethered balloon.
