    Comments

The present work shows a scene from Goethe's "Faust" with the figures Faust, Mephisto, and Margarete. The composition plays with light and shadow, with the lighter figures standing out from the dark background. Faust, in a brown coat, stands in the center, Margarete sits on a bench to the left wearing a light dress, and Mephisto on the right remains in the shadowy background. Sargent's painting style is expressive and gestural, the figures are modeled with quick strokes. The surface reveals several layers, with white gouache providing highlights. The vertical composition focuses on the tension between the three figures.

This work was probably created around 1895, when Sargent was intensely engaged with literary and mythological themes of European cultural history. The Faust theme fascinated artists of this era, especially the tragedy of the pact and the seduction of Margarete.
