    Comments

The present work shows an appealing, small-format landscape with a figure placed at the lower right in the foreground. On the reverse of the sheet are colour samples, offering insight into the artist’s experimental working process. The motif "Landschaft mit Palme" is among the characteristic pictorial themes in the late work of Georges Rouault. The palm appears as a recurring element in his landscape depictions, which often possess a mystical-biblical atmosphere. Rouault regularly combined oil paint and gouache with pastel and ink. By layering different materials in a multi-faceted way, the artist achieved an extraordinary sense of depth reminiscent of the translucent surface of enamel.
