    Comments

The grotesque serves to make the unbearable—such as the consequences of a stroke of fate or misfortune—both tangible and more bearable. In this lithograph, Klee interprets life as a dance on uncertain ground. Human existence appears like a play on stilts: artificially elevated, unstable, and constantly threatened by a loss of balance. The three bizarre figures appear at once whimsical, absurd, and comical, creating a peculiar tension between tragedy and irony.
