Oskar Bätschmann/Paul Müller, Ferdinand Hodler, Catalogue raisonné der Gemälde, vol. 1, Die Landschaften, sub-volume 1 and 2, Zurich 2008
Cardboard laid down on wood panel, slightly rubbed at the edges due to the frame. With very fine craquelures and small scratches. In very good and fresh in colour condition
In addition to the present work, four other versions of "Thuner- und Brienzersee mit Freiburgerstier" are known in the catalogue raisonné, which differ slightly in terms of colouring and composition (see Bätschmann/Müller 155-158). The painting offered here is particularly striking for its bright light and the clarity of its depiction. Hodler composed the scene from two motifs, which he also used individually: the landscape backdrop with Lake Thun and Lake Brienz (see Bätschmann/Müller 150-154) and the Freiburger bull (see Bätschmann/Müller 615, 617, 620, and 624). In this composition, the artist used the bull as a staffage figure in the mountain landscape. The painter's viewpoint was above Därligen, which is indicated at the lower left by a few houses. The main part of the painting is taken up by Lake Thun, with the Harder in the middle ground on the left and the Därlig ridge on the right. In between lies the floodplain near Interlaken, the Bödeli, which is connected in the background to Lake Brienz.
