The present work shows the characteristic reduction of a coastal landscape to geometric basic forms. Feininger spans a spatial coordinate system from fine ink lines, structuring the illusion of depth. Broad watercolour patches in shades of brown, grey-violet, and ochre create atmospheric areas that stand in contrast to the linear-constructive framework. The motif of a dematerialized landscape, in which shoreline, mast, and horizontal are condensed into pure visual poetry, is typical of the artist's late work.
