    Comments

The motif of the village pond of Gelmeroda is one of the recurring subjects in Feininger's work; he repeatedly captured the place and its architecture in drawings and paintings since the 1900s. However, the present work was created only in 1946, after the artist's emigration to the United States, and thus comes from a period in which Feininger revisited the motif from memory.
