    Comments

Depicted is the French banker and politician Antoine Odier (1766-1853). He belonged to the bourgeois elite of his time, which is why Daumier portrays him with a condescending expression and in a caricatured manner. The bronze comes from the series "Célébrités du juste milieu". This originally included busts made of clay and depicted prominent political figures. In 1925, the art dealer Maurice Le Garrec purchased 36 of these busts and subsequently had posthumous bronze casts made in editions of 25 and 30 copies at the Barbedienne foundry. The present cast is the 14th example of an edition of 30. The stamp "M.L.G." Refers to Maurice Le Garrec. According to the Daumier Register, the cast was made between 1929 and 1940.

We thank the Daumier Register for the kind information.
