    Comments

According to Karl Eric Maison, the present sheet is an early compositional study for the watercolour "Intérieur d'un wagon de première classe", which is now in The Walters Art Museum (formerly Henry Walters Collection). In the 1933 auction at C.G. Boerner in collaboration with Gutekunst & Klipstein, the drawing was still offered under the title "Im Wagen III. Klasse". In the course of compiling the catalogue raisonné and his further research, however, Maison came to the conclusion that the sheet should be regarded as a study for the first class carriage and not for the third class one. The decisive factor here were differences in the compositional elements. Maison also suspects that some pencil strokes may have been added later by a third hand. The present sheet is among the artist's best-known subjects and represents a significant and characteristic drawing from his mature creative period.
