    Comments

Marc Chagall lived in exile in New York from May/June 1941 to 1948, where he was represented by the gallerist Pierre Matisse. Matisse also acted as publisher of the book by Lionello Venturi on Marc Chagall, which appeared in 1945 in a total edition of 1,500 copies. For the special edition, the artist created this sheet, which was included with the first 50 copies. Of these, 20 copies contained the signed etching in black and white, 30 the graphic work coloured by the artist. Brilliantly coloured example, executed in watercolour, with unique character.
