    Comments

Our collage of torn, blue and yellow dyed, brown and black pieces of paper embodies the Dadaist demands on new art in the best possible way. These include, for example, bringing chance to the center of the artistic creative process, provocation through new forms of expression, and the rejection of pure aesthetics and harmony. According to contemporaries of Hans Arp, the artist created his collages by tearing paper into pieces, letting them fall onto the studio floor, and gluing the scraps in the arrangement in which they happened to land. Arp thus left control to the chance of gravity, instead of designing the sheets according to his own plan. Hans Arp and his artist friends liberated creativity from rational thinking and established conventions. The relatively orderly appearance of the present work suggests that the artist did not entirely relinquish control over the creative process.
