With the greatest probability, both the church in winter and its counterpart, the church in summer (catalogue raisonné no. 1907.47), Depict the chapel in Prégny-Grand-Saconnex near Geneva, which was built in 1905 by the Geneva architect Edmond Fatio (1871-1951) and was then considered an especially good example of a small modern Swiss church.

The somewhat schematic pointillist style could suggest that the two paintings were created at the beginning of this stylistic period of Cuno Amiet, as early as 1905. However, from this period, we know of no journey by the artist to Geneva that would support this assumption. Moreover, the journal of the Swiss Heritage Protection published a photograph of the church in 1907 from a viewpoint almost identical to that of the two paintings by Amiet. If this photograph served the artist as a model, he could not have painted the pictures before 1907.

Mit grösster Wahrscheinlichkeit handelt es sich bei der Kirche im Winter wie auch bei ihrem Pendant, der Kirche im Sommer (Werkkatalog Nr. 1907.47), um die Kapelle in Prégny-Grand-Saconnex bei Genf, die 1905 von dem Genfer Architekten Edmond Fatio (1871-1951) errichtet wurde und damals als besonders gutes Beispiel einer kleinen modernen Schweizer Kirche galt.

Der etwas schematisch anmutende pointillistische Duktus könnte eine Entstehung der beiden Bilder in die Anfangszeit dieser Stilepoche Cuno Amiets, bereits ab 1905, nahelegen. Aus diesem Zeitraum ist uns indessen keine Reise des Künstlers nach Genf bekannt, die diese Vermutung stützen würde. Zudem publizierte das Organ des Schweizer Heimatschutzes im Jahr 1907 eine Fotografie der Kirche aus einem mit den beiden Gemälden von Amiet fast identischen Blickwinkel. Sollte diese Aufnahme dem Künstler als Vorlage gedient haben, könnte er die Bilder nicht vor 1907 gemalt haben.
