During a creative hiatus of about five years in the mid-1970s, Bernar Venet devoted himself intensively to scientific questions. His interest focused particularly on physics and mathematics, whose laws and abstract systems of order left a lasting mark on his artistic thinking. In this phase, he developed the line as a central artistic principle—not as a drawn element, but as a spatially perceptible form that makes physical forces, movement, and energy visible. From this conceptual realignment emerged the characteristic steel sculptures, often rolled into spiral or arc shapes, which today count among the most iconic groups of works in his oeuvre.

The "Indeterminate Lines" made of solid forged steel, illustrate the tension between calculable materiality and the apparent unpredictability of form. Although their shape conveys an impression of spontaneous movement, they are based on precise physical processes and the controlled deformation of the material. The energy stored in the coiled steel bands remains present as a latent element and lends the works an extraordinary dynamism. In the interplay of stability and instability, heaviness and lightness, as well as balance and fragility, they redefine the surrounding space and make fundamental phenomena such as time, movement, and gravity sensually perceptible. Venet thus combines conceptual rigor with sculptural presence and expands the tradition of abstract sculpture by adding a dimension rooted in physics. The present, large-format sculpture, made from a single rolled steel band, is one of the most impressive manifestations of this group of works and exemplifies the formal and conceptual radicality of his creative output.

Während einer rund fünfjährigen schöpferischen Pause Mitte der 1970er-Jahre wandte sich Bernar Venet intensiv naturwissenschaftlichen Fragestellungen zu. Sein Interesse galt insbesondere der Physik und Mathematik, deren Gesetzmässigkeiten und abstrakte Ordnungssysteme sein künstlerisches Denken nachhaltig prägten. In dieser Phase entwickelte er die Linie als zentrales bildnerisches Prinzip, nicht als zeichnerisches Element, sondern als räumlich erfahrbare Form, die physikalische Kräfte, Bewegung und Energie sichtbar werden lässt. Aus dieser konzeptuellen Neuausrichtung entstanden die charakteristischen, häufig spiral- oder bogenförmig gerollten Stahlskulpturen, die heute zu den ikonischsten Werkgruppen seines Œuvres zählen.

Die aus massivem geschmiedetem Stahl gefertigten "Indeterminate Lines" (unbestimmte Linien) veranschaulichen die Spannung zwischen kalkulierbarer Materialität und scheinbarer Unvorhersehbarkeit der Form. Obwohl ihre Gestalt den Eindruck spontaner Bewegung vermittelt, beruhen sie auf präzisen physikalischen Prozessen und der kontrollierten Verformung des Materials. Die in den aufgerollten Stahlbändern gespeicherte Energie bleibt als latentes Moment präsent und verleiht den Werken eine aussergewöhnliche Dynamik. Im Wechselspiel von Stabilität und Instabilität, Schwere und Leichtigkeit sowie Gleichgewicht und Fragilität definieren sie den umgebenden Raum neu und machen fundamentale Phänomene wie Zeit, Bewegung und Gravitation sinnlich erfahrbar. Venet verbindet damit konzeptuelle Strenge mit skulpturaler Präsenz und erweitert die Tradition der abstrakten Plastik um eine physikalisch gedachte Dimension. Die vorliegende, grossformatige Skulptur, aus einem einzigen gerollten Stahlband gefertigt, gehört zu den eindrucksvollsten Ausprägungen dieser Werkgruppe und verdeutlicht exemplarisch die formale und konzeptuelle Radikalität seines Schaffens.
