The title of the work refers to the Chinese politician Deng Xiaoping (1904–1997), who, from the late 1970s into the 1990s, shaped the fate of China as the "outstanding leader" Although he held neither the office of state president nor that of party chairman, he is regarded as the "Architect of Reform and Opening-Up". Through his far-reaching reforms, he initiated China's transformation from a communist planned economy to a market-oriented economic power. At the same time, he rehabilitated numerous victims of the Cultural Revolution (1966–1976) and pushed forward the comprehensive modernization of the country, aiming to improve the population's standard of living. In doing so, he created essential prerequisites for China's current rise to global power. However, economic opening was not accompanied by political liberalization. Deng Xiaoping consistently maintained the Communist Party's unrestricted claim to power and was politically responsible for the violent suppression of the democracy movement in Tiananmen Square in 1989. Against the background of this field of tension between economic modernization, political repression, and profound social change, the present kinetic sculpture was created. The "Mischwesen" created by Tinguely unfolds a multi-layered symbolism. The title "Deng Xiaoping" refers to the fundamental political and economic upheavals of that time and their impact on the global political order. The skull can be read as an allusion to the consumer society and its destructive consequences. The machine itself stands symbolically for technological overproduction, restless progress, and ultimately purposeless movement. In its incessant circling, it recalls the endless, sometimes absurd "Hamsterrad" of the modern world and at the same time alludes to the transience of all human action. In this work, Jean Tinguely combines his characteristic, subtle humour with a shrewd parody of the contradictions and absurdities of modernity. The sculpture is thus a typical example of his oeuvre: playful in expression, yet profound and not without a subtle wink.
