    Comments

The present work shows a female face framed by dense ornamental decoration. Soutter captures the features with fine black line drawings, while at the same time embedding the visage in a differentiated pattern of geometric and floral elements. With Indian ink and gouache, he develops a complex structure in which intense blue and orange tones as well as red accents run through the sheet. Despite this ornamental envelopment, the face remains present; the linear structures and decorative patterns give the depiction an orientalising aesthetic.

The work was created during a phase in which Soutter increasingly combined figurative motifs with abstract formal language. Around 1930, the work belongs to those sheets that document his incomparable ability to interweave objectivity and ornamental density.
