    Comments

The 1920s marked the beginning of a period of travel for Schmidt-Rottluff. In 1923, he set out for the first time towards southern Europe to explore Italy. This was followed by trips to Paris (1924), Dalmatia (1925), and to Ticino (1927-1929). The inspiration the artist gained during these journeys resulted in an increased production of landscape paintings.

In the present watercolour, a change in style is also apparent: Schmidt-Rottluff breaks down the city scene with the church tower—probably a Dalmatian campanile—into reduced forms and contrasting colour fields, sometimes strongly and sometimes delicately washed. The colour loses some of its luminosity and is used in a more nuanced way.
