This work was created during Purrmann's stays on Ischia. The artist, who lived in Montagnola above Lugano after the war, returned regularly to this island in the Gulf of Naples in the 1950s. Purrmann had already discovered Ischia in 1924 and found there a subject that matched his interest in colour and Mediterranean light. Stylistically, the work belongs to Purrmann's engagement with Impressionism and colour painting. The views of Ischia form an important group of works in Purrmann's late period. Even today, the harbour of Porto d'Ischia looks as picturesque as in Purrmann's paintings and has lost none of its beauty.

Diese Arbeit entstand während Purrmanns Aufenthalten auf Ischia. Der Künstler, der nach dem Krieg in Montagnola oberhalb von Lugano lebte, kehrte in den 1950er-Jahren regelmässig zu dieser Insel im Golf von Neapel zurück. Purrmann hatte Ischia bereits 1924 kennengelernt und fand dort ein Sujet, das sein Interesse an Farbe und mediterranem Licht traf. Stilistisch gehört das Werk zu Purrmanns Auseinandersetzung mit dem Impressionismus und der Farbmalerei. Die Ansichten von Ischia bilden einen bedeutenden Werkkreis in Purrmanns Spätphase. Noch heute sieht der Hafen von Porto d'Ischia so pittoresk wie auf Purrmanns Gemälden aus und hat nichts von seiner Schönheit verloren.
