With traces of old mounting on the reverse. Clean and fresh in colour
The present work shows an older bearded man with a brush in front of a canvas, drawing a seated female model. The composition captures the classic studio situation: the artist on the left, gazing intently at the model, the woman on the right, seated in profile on a chair. Picasso renders the scene with pen and ink in quick, precise lines on wove paper. The drawing is economical, every stroke is deliberate, with no need for modeling or hatching. The heads are characteristically captured, and the body postures convey the mutual attention between painter and model.
This sheet was created on 10 January 1954 and is the eleventh work drawn on that day. It belongs to a series of 180 drawings that Picasso produced between 28 November 1953 and 3 February 1954. All sheets have the same paper format, most are executed in pen and ink. The series was published in 1954 in the magazine Verve, issues 29/30, in full-page format. Many sheets deal with the theme "Painter and Model". Originally unsigned, Picasso later signed the sheets for sale through Galerie Louise Leiris after 1955. The series documents an intense daily engagement with a classic studio motif.
