    Comments

Emil Nolde was closely connected with the art historian Max Sauerlandt (1880–1934) for decades. As director of the Kunstmuseum Halle, Max Sauerlandt acquired Nolde's religious work "Abendmahl" in 1913. This was one of the first significant acquisitions of Nolde's works by a German museum. In 1921, Sauerlandt published the first comprehensive monograph on Nolde. Finally, in 1933, shortly before his death, the art historian gave a lecture on modern art in which he paid great attention to Nolde and thus assigned him a key position.
