    Comments

Klee's first significant graphic work was created in July 1903 in Bern. It was first printed in May 1904 in an edition of 30 numbered copies. The etchings "im strengen Stil", with which Klee broke completely new ground in his time and gave internationally important impulses to graphic art after 1900, were called "Inventionen" by him and were created from July 1903 to March 1905. All were created in Bern and printed by Max Girardet, who ran a print studio at Mattenhof, Belpstrasse 41. For the title, Klee considered various versions. In addition to the two titles mentioned above, there are also "Träumende Jungfrau" and "Jungfrau in schlechter Gesellschaft".
