    Comments

Raymond Hains is an important representative of the Nouveaux Réalistes. Together with his artist friend Jacques de la Villeglé (see cat. no. 292), He collected street posters, tore them up, and reassembled the pieces in a new context to create his own works of art, the "affiches lacérées". As early as the 1940s, Hains and Villeglé worked intensively with the medium of the poster, thereby challenging the concept of art in the 20th century by showing that even torn, randomly found street posters could be elevated to contemporary art. Exemplary for Nouveau Réalisme.
