The watercolour offered here was created during Feininger's summer stay in Deep near Kohlberg on the Baltic Sea coast, where the artist went every May from 1924 onwards with his wife Julia (1880-1970). The work, in characteristic manner, depicts the geometrically condensed architectural landscape of the fishing village, with building masses interlocked in prismatic forms. Pen and ink and transparent colour application model the composition through fine lines and subtle brown-grey tonal areas, while a small blue accent in the middle right alludes to the maritime environment. The pictorial idea is based on direct observations of nature, which Feininger captured on site as quick sketches and later transformed into painterly compositions.

Stylistically, the work belongs to the core phase of Feininger's "Prismaismus", that Cubist-inspired formal language in which translucent light effects and crystalline structures transcend the motif. During his years at the Bauhaus, where he taught from 1919 to 1935, Deep became a place of the most intense artistic engagement for him.

The personal dedication at the lower margin documents the significance that the work and this place held for the artist. It is likely to have been a Christmas present for his wife Julia.

Erläuterungen

Das hier angebotene Aquarell entstand während Feiningers Sommeraufenthalt in Deep nahe Kohlberg an der Ostseeküste, wohin sich der Künstler ab 1924 jeden Mai mit seiner Frau Julia (1880-1970) begab. Die Arbeit zeigt in charakteristischer Manier die geometrisch verdichtete Architekturlandschaft des Fischerdorfes, bei der die Gebäudemassen in prismatischen Formen ineinander verschachtelt sind. Tuschfeder und transparenter Farbauftrag modellieren die Komposition durch feinen Linienzug und subtile braun-graue Flächenwirkung, während eine kleine blaue Akzentuierung Mitte rechts auf die maritime Umgebung anspielt. Die Bildidee geht auf unmittelbare Naturbeobachtungen zurück, die Feininger vor Ort als flüchtige Skizzen festhielt und später ins Malerische übertrug.

Stilistisch gehört das Werk in die Kernphase von Feiningers "Prismaismus", jener kubistisch inspirierten Formensprache, die durch durchscheinende Lichtwirkung und kristalline Strukturen das Motiv transzendiert. Deep wurde während seiner Jahre am Bauhaus, wo er zwischen 1919 und 1935 lehrte, zum Ort intensivster künstlerischer Auseinandersetzung.

Die persönliche Widmung am Unterrand dokumentiert die Bedeutung, die das Werk und dieser Ort für den Künstler besassen. Es dürfte sich um ein Weihnachtsgeschenk für seine Frau Julia handeln.
