With remnants of old mounting on the reverse, with three artists pinholes at the edges. In excellent condition
Maritime scenes were a lifelong theme for Lyonel Feininger. The artist liked to spend the summer months with his family by the sea, from 1908 to 1921 on the island of Usedom, where numerous watercolours and paintings with sailing ships and fishing boats were created.
The present work shows a mighty sailing ship, carried by waves as it enters the harbor, passing the lighthouse and the viewers standing on the pier. Dynamic pen and ink lines are translucently washed with watercolour in blue, yellow, and brown tones. The composition is framed by a border, typical of all of Feininger's finished works.
