The intact wooden panel is fixed in a light frame. In places fine craquelures and creasing in the paint. With minor retouched areas. In very good condition
Daumier was one of the most important caricaturists of the 19th century. He created over 4,000 political and socially critical lithographs for magazines such as La Caricature and Le Charivari. However, his drawings and paintings remained almost completely unnoticed during his lifetime. These were mostly small-format paintings with a dark, earthy palette, through which he closely observed people in their everyday lives. He painted with quick, almost sketch-like brushstrokes. His treatment of light and shadow made him an important forerunner of Impressionism. Even in "Le liseur", Daumier dispenses with fine details; it is important to him to capture the stillness of the moment. The light falls on the reader’s face and the book, while the background disappears into earthy, dark shadow.
Daumier devoted a whole series of paintings to the subject of reading. It stands for the growing, educated bourgeoisie, but also for the increasing importance of the press and literature in everyday life.

In sehr gutem Zustand
Daumier war einer der bedeutendsten Karikaturisten des 19. Jahrhunderts.
