    Comments

The present impressive late work by Lovis Corinth was created during one of the artist’s regular stays in Urfeld am Walchensee. The painter and his wife had owned a wooden house in the municipality of Kochel am See since 1919. Corinth moved to the Bavarian foothills of the Alps after the difficult years of the First World War and under the influence of the political unrest of the postwar period. In nature, he found new inspiration and developed a particularly free, expressive painting style. With lively brushstrokes, vibrant colours, and dynamic composition, he captured the changing moods of the mountainous landscape. Our painting shows the Herzogstand, which rises to a height of 1,731 meters above sea level northwest of the Walchensee, its slopes covered with a white blanket of snow. Together with the neighbouring Heimgarten, the striking mountain forms a ridge. In the foreground, trees lightly covered with snow frame the composition and lead the viewer’s gaze into the depth of the pictorial space. On the left side of the painting, a section of the Walchensee can be seen. The tranquil winter landscape conveys a clear, fresh atmosphere. Corinth was fascinated by the special lighting conditions, the clear mountain air, and the interplay of mountains, sky, and water. In the following years, he created more than sixty paintings depicting the lake and its surroundings in different seasons and weather conditions. Among the remarkable winter paintings of this creative period, in addition to the present work, are "Walchensee, Neuschnee, 1922" (Hernad/Berend-Corinth 873) and "Walchensee im Winter, 1923" (Hernad/Berend-Corinth 897). The artist’s Walchensee paintings are now considered highlights of his late work and impressively document the artist’s close connection to the Upper Bavarian landscape.
