    Comments

In his later works, Marc Chagall further developed the simultaneous narrative strands already present in his early pieces into complex pictorial stories. This simultaneity allows viewers to find their own path through the image.

The gouache offered here presents a very special vision of the painter, peppered with elements characteristic of the artist from various times and places: The entire scene takes place on or above a square in his birthplace, Vitebsk. In the background, the snow-covered rooftops of the houses can be seen, and the tree standing in the square seems to glow peculiarly from within. The townspeople go about their traditional work. Above the tree, the painter himself can be seen; it appears as if he is painting the scene directly onto a sheet or canvas. Above him, stretching across the entire width of the image, floats a mother with her child—a leitmotif in Chagall's work, symbolizing life and love, like the rooster and the luminous trees. A very richly composed, structured sheet that beautifully captures the Chagall cosmos.
