    Comments

Marc Chagall spent several summers in the Upper Engadine, whose clear air, intense light, and impressive landscape left a lasting impression on him. He stayed five times at the Hotel Waldhaus in Sils.

The wide plain and the special atmosphere of the high valley are reflected in several works from this period. The present sheet, with a lush summer bouquet in front of the window, was also created in the Engadine. Daisies and probably delphiniums bloom in competition with a bouquet of violets and invite us to discover the landscape from their perspective.

The bouquet of flowers in Marc Chagall's oeuvre stands as an ephemeral, metaphorical source of inspiration that blurs, or even dissolves, the boundary between exterior and interior space. Flowers always play a leading role. The artist also uses the bouquet to express his artistic identity as a draughtsman and sculptor. His flowers become real, almost three-dimensional, luminous fireworks that sustainably transform the inner world with scent and color.
