    Comments

Olle Bærtling occupies a significant position in non-figurative art of the 20th century. In 1949, the artist decided to work exclusively with geometric forms and to significantly reduce his color palette. During this period, he developed his own distinctive style. While earlier works were still characterized by a great variety of forms, the paintings of the 1950s each focus on a single geometric shape, namely the triangle.

The chosen form is subject to a strict compositional concept, in which black lines and spaces clearly separate the colored areas from each other and in which there is no clear center of the image. The contrasts created by the use of black produce deliberate color dissonances in the painting. Yet the black outlines never merge or intersect; they run straight to the edge of the picture and thus clearly separate the three-colored triangles from one another. The title "BIRGI" refers to the female first name Birgit; it is likely to have been a friend of the artist.

Exemplary position for non-figurative art and geometric abstraction.

We thank Marc Aderheim for the kind information.
