Comments

Arp was a co-founder of the Dadaist movement in Zurich and was in close contact with the Surrealists. He created biomorphic sculptures and reliefs that combined organic, amoeboid forms with mathematical geometry. Inspired by the world of minerals, plants, and animals, he created an organic abstraction that reflected cyclical processes such as growth, change, and death.

The present nine drawings by Jean Arp are original illustrations for the poetry anthology "La sphère de sable" by Georges Hugnet, one of the most important poets of Surrealism. Arp illustrated the book with a total of 35 black-and-white woodcuts, which he designed between 1932 and 1938. The anthology was published in Paris in 1943 in 176 copies and 20 deluxe editions by the publisher Robert-J. Godet.

Arp war Mitbegründer der dadaistischen Bewegung in Zürich und stand in engem Austausch mit den Surrealisten. Er schuf biomorphe Plastiken und Reliefs, die organische, amöboide Formen mit mathematischer Geometrie vereinten. Inspiriert von der Welt der Mineralien, Pflanzen und Tiere, kreierte er eine organische Abstraktion, die zyklische Prozesse wie Wachstum, Wandel und Tod reflektierte.

Die vorliegenden neun Zeichnungen von Jean Arp sind Originalillustrationen für die Gedichtsanthologie "La sphère de sable" von Georges Hugnet, einem der wichtigsten Dichter des Surrealismus. Arp illustrierte das Buch mit insgesamt 35 schwarz-weissen Holzschnitten, die er zwischen 1932 und 1938 entworfen hatte. Die Anthologie erschien 1943 in Paris und wurde in 176 Exemplaren und 20 Vorzugsausgaben im Verlag von Robert-J. Godet gedruckt.
