    Comments

In contrast to the self-portrait (Müller/Radlach 1918.03) and analogous to the iconographically very similar version (Müller/Radlach 1919.02), The studio interior is described in greater detail. Behind the table covered with a checkered cloth and a vase of flowers, a female bust stands on a cabinet. Presumably, this is the sandstone portrait of his wife Anna, which Amiet began in 1918, completed in 1921, and depicted in various paintings. A large painting, probably "Garten I" from 1914 (Müller/Radlach 1914.49), is propped against the studio wall. Behind Amiet’s neck, the outline of another bust on a modeling stand can possibly be made out. By depicting this environment, Amiet presented himself as an artist and further emphasized his self-image as a painter with the ostentatiously displayed palette, which he holds—in mirror image—in his right hand. However, he did not portray himself as a bohemian, but, as so often, as a well-groomed gentleman in a bourgeois jacket, white shirt, and bow tie. Unlike in the self-portrait painted the previous year (Müller/Radlach 1918.03), Amiet here appears with his head held high, eyes wide open, and furrowed brow (from: Müller/Radlach 1907.41).
