    Comments

The present work shows a characteristic watercolour composition from the Paris period of the early 1950s. The picture surface is completely covered with a dense, vibrating colour structure reminiscent of an abstract mosaic or an interwoven net. Dominant blue tones are interspersed with luminous orange, yellow, green, and violet hues, while black accents create rhythmic structures.

The watercolour technique unfolds its full effect in the glazed layers of colour and the flowing transitions between the individual colour fields. Francis uses the transparency of the medium to create complex overlays in which the colours interpenetrate each other. The spontaneous gesture and the vibrant colours bear witness to the immediate energy of the creative process. Vertical colour runs and drip marks reinforce the dynamic character of the composition.

The work was probably created in the studio at Rue Tiphaine 14, which Francis had moved into a year earlier. As William C. Agee describes, it stands "in leuchtendem Kontrast zu den weiss-grauen Gemälden, die das winterliche Licht der Stadt einfangen und die er kurz zuvor vollendet hatte". In "Colorful Paris" Francis continued the tradition of Monet and classical Impressionism by first capturing the changes of a place through time and season, but now exclusively through an abstract pictorial language of colour.
