The present large-format work from the mature creative period of Sam Francis was painted in the studio on West Channel Road in Santa Monica and shows a characteristic composition that documents Francis's developed visual language of the 1970s. The composition is organized around a cruciform structure, with intense color zones arranged on a light, almost white ground. Dominant dark blue and black color fields form the main axes, while bright accents in yellow, orange, red, turquoise, and violet enliven the spaces between.
Sam Francis's characteristic drip and splatter technique is shown here in its full maturity. Numerous paint splashes of varying sizes are distributed across the entire canvas, creating a rhythmic connection between the dense color zones and the open white areas. The paint application varies between translucent and opaque passages, with overlays producing complex chromatic interactions. The generously left white ground functions as an active pictorial element and enhances the luminosity of the colors.
This work was created during a phase in which Francis increasingly concentrated his compositions on central structures and assigned equal importance to the unpainted space. The cruciform arrangement gives the work an archetypal quality without aiming for symbolic clarity. Stylistically, the work combines elements of Abstract Expressionism with a meditative openness that reflects Francis's intensive engagement with Eastern philosophy and Zen Buddhism.
