Sam Francis spent almost the entire year of 1959 in New York and returned to Paris in spring 1960 with Teruko Yokoi Francis and their daughter Kayo. There he lived on Rue des Douaniers in the 14th arrondissement and worked in the large studio in Arcueil. In the summer and autumn of 1960, the first paintings of the "Blue Balls" series were created, including the present painting. It shows a composition from the early creative period, documenting his developed edge-zone technique. The picture surface is organized around a generously left white center, while organic color forms in various shades of blue are distributed along the edges—the characteristic "Blue Balls" These circular to oval shapes vary between deep ultramarine, Prussian blue, and lighter turquoise tones, occasionally complemented by subtle green accents.
Francis's unique painting technique is evident in the translucent layers of color and the controlled drip marks. The individual color forms seem to float and, through their overlaps, create complex chromatic interactions. Fine splatters across the entire canvas create a rhythmic connection between the dense edge zones and the open center. The white ground does not function as empty space, but as an active, breathing element of the composition.
Stylistically, the work combines elements of Abstract Expressionism with a specific sensitivity to light and color that Francis developed during his Paris years.
The "Blue Balls" series is among the artist's most important groups of works and documents his pioneering position in American postwar painting as well as his innovative connection of Western and Eastern aesthetic concepts.

Auf dem originalen Chassis. Leichte Atelierspuren auf der Vorderseite. In ausgezeichnetem Zustand
